Ahmedabad, May 16, 2025 - The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Bahubali Shah, co-owner of the influential Gujarati daily Gujarat Samachar, following extensive raids on the newspaper’s offices and the residences of the Shah family. The arrest, carried out late Thursday night, is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities and follows earlier searches by the Income Tax Department.
Bahubali Shah, a director of Lok Prakashan Limited which publishes Gujarat Samachar, was taken into custody after ED officials raided the newspaper’s headquarters in Khanpur, Ahmedabad, as well as the homes of Bahubali and his elder brother, Shreyansh Shah, who is the managing editor. The raids also extended to GSTV, a Gujarati news channel linked to the Shah family.
Following his detention, Bahubali Shah reportedly experienced health issues and was first taken to VS Hospital for a medical check-up, before being transferred to Zydus Hospital at his request. Family sources confirmed his arrest but said the specific charges have not yet been disclosed by the authorities.
The ED has not issued an official statement regarding the reasons for the arrest. However, the opposition Congress party has alleged that the action is politically motivated, citing Gujarat Samachar’s critical coverage of the central government. The Shah family has also claimed they are being targeted for their editorial stance.
Gujarat Samachar, established in 1932, is one of the state’s largest and most influential newspapers, jointly managed by the Shah brothers for several decades. The developments have sparked reactions from journalists and political leaders, with calls for transparency regarding the investigation.
